What is Quilling? A Basic Introduction

Quilling is the art of rolling, shaping and gluing long strips of paper into designs and patterns. It involves using a variety of tools to help manipulate the paper into particular shapes before they are glued.

Using paper in such a way can produce an endless variety of beautiful and intricate designs! These designs can be used in cards, gift tags or even in picture frames!

Some Basic Quilling Materials

  1. The Slotted Tool – This is used to grab the end of your paper making it quick and easy to coil.

  2. The Needle Tool – This can also help with rolling the paper or guiding it as necessary.

  3. Tweezers – These will help you guide your paper.

  4. The Circle Sized Ruler or Quilling Board – These items will help you create specific and consistent shapes of your choice!

  5. Glue – Use a good thick glue that dries quickly.

  6. Quilling Paper in a variety of colors

Today we will only need the Slotted tool, either the Circle Sized ruler or Quilling board, glue and of course quilling paper!

Some Basic Shapes Used in This Tutorial

  1. Marquise
  2. Y Scroll

  3. Same-Side Scroll

There are many more shapes to make but for this tutorial, I’m going to keep it basic just to help get you started!

Let’s make a bouquet of flowers for a gift tag

In this design, I made 15 Marquise shapes in a variety of colors. These will be used for the flowers.

Next I created two scrolls: The “Y” scroll and the Same-Side Scroll for the stems.

I carefully glued the flowers to the stems and then glued the back edges of my bouquet to the gift tag. Once the glue dried I continued to decorate with some additional sentiments to add a little sparkle.

I hope this basic introduction was helpful in opening up your curiosity to quilling. It is truly a relaxing hobby that will allow you to make endless creations!
