Squash Card Turned Christmas Ornament

There’s just something special about a squash card that really pops. I think we can all agree on that. The squash card is more like a small book that is great for photos and quotes. It can really be a fun surprise for its unsuspecting recipient.

Just another card?

It feels like such a unique paper craft warrants more than just being a simple unusually shaped card sitting with the rest of the year’s cards on a table. It also looks like a book that’s not even a book! It could be a mini photo album—but where could you store it?

An idea

How about on the Christmas tree? It really makes a great ornament that can hold a sample of pictures of all the special moments that year. What’s even better is that instead of buying a new ornament for the year, this can be the ornament!

So let’s make one!

Squash Card Turned Christmas Ornament Tutorial

Step 1: Start with 3 pieces of 8”x8” cardstock.

Step 2: Fold them all in half: top to bottom, side to side and one diagonal fold (Note the direction of the peaks and valleys).

Step 3: Now prepare for the placement of each piece of cardstock for gluing. The center piece will be placed on the top of the right and left piece.

Step 4: Place the unfolded sections in the center piece onto the glue and let dry.  Follow the written guide below to determine which way the folds should go from left, center and right. Peaks vs. Valleys.

Step 5: Now fold the card up into a square

Step 6: Now cut out two 4.5” x 4.5” pieces of chipboard or cardboard for the outside panels.

Step 7: Cut out two pieces of 5.5”x 5.5” pieces of decorative paper.

Step 8: Glue the chipboard/cardboard to the back centers of the decorative paper.

Step 9: Cut all 4 corners of each piece of decorative paper.

Step 10: Add glue to all outer edges of the decorative paper and adhere it firmly to the chip/cardboard. Press firmly until the glue holds.

Step 11: Now your outside panels are ready to be glued to the main section of the card.

Step 12: Add glue to the center section of the chip/cardboard and center onto the main section of the card (be careful not to leave any chip/cardboard exposed). Hold tightly and do the same to the other side.

For the inside

Step 1: Get ten 3”x3” pieces of decorative paper and cut them diagonally.

Step 2: Glue each triangle to the triangular shaped pieces inside the card.

Step 3: From there add photos, sayings or quotes onto the card and decorate as necessary. And don’t forget to add a cute die cut or other sentiment to the front!

From card to ornament

I used a rubber-band and attached it to the back corners of the card and used some green ribbon to cover the exposed rubber-band. Then I added an additional piece of ribbon in a loop to allow it to hang on the Christmas tree. Now your squash card turned ornament is complete!

Merry Christmas everyone!
