The house always feels so bare after all the holiday decorations have been taken down for the season. Suddenly the living room seems like it’s grown twice the size but all the magic has disappeared.
Â
I start to miss the twinkling lights almost immediately–the one thing that makes everything feel so warm and cozy. Now it’s January and it’s dark and rainy. Something’s gotta give.
I can’t bring the holiday stuff back out but I can create a piece of “January Decor,” if you will. After receiving this beautiful bowl for Christmas I decided to give it a little January coziness.
After coming up with some ideas for bowl fillers, this is what I ended up with: some jute twine, tissue paper and fairy lights. This project is certainly different than my others but it was fun nonetheless.
Â
First I made some orbs. Yes, orbs. Sure, I could have purchased them but I decided to make them for free at home. It’s that easy!
For the orbs
Blow up a balloon to the size of your liking. Then run some jute twine through some wood glue. Once covered, wrap the jute twine around the balloon and hang the balloon up while it dries for a few hours. After it is dry, (check carefully that it is completely dry) pop the balloon and pull it out from one of the openings in the orb.
Optional: Add some glitter to some more wood glue and gently brush it onto your orb for some extra sparkle!
Now you have one orb completed!
For the tissue flowers
Take a few pieces of tissue paper (the kind you use in presents or gift bags). Start from one end and fold it back and forth like an accordion. Tie a string around the center and fold it in half. Cut the tip of the folded paper into a point. Slowly and carefully (try not to let it rip), pull each piece of tissue paper apart until a tissue flower has formed.
Fairy lights
These fairy lights are what will add the final element of magic to your bowl and Amazon sells all sorts of them inexpensively.
Optional: Add some orange slices. I used some leftover slices from a Christmas ornament project from last year. To make: Cut an orange into thin slices and dehydrate until they are completely dry.
Once all of your pieces are ready to go, arrange them in your bowl to your liking with the fairy lights on the bottom. Voila!
Interesting…
I love this!
